South America vacation destinations are growing in popularity for a variety of reasons. The major destinations are a relatively short plane flight from U. S. Departure points. The weather is reversed from Northern Hemisphere climate, so you can enjoy your preferred weather year around. The vast number of different ecological zones provides variety and often the prices are surprisingly reasonable. Here are a few holiday spots that may be of interest to travelers from North America or Europe.

There are many types of activities in South America. Miles of white sand beaches with opportunities for diving and snorkeling. You can find surfing opportunities along the coastline of Ecuador. There are historical sites and architectural marvels throughout the continent. You can participate in feast days and celebrations in many different cultures. If shopping is your idea of the ideal vacation, there are plenty of opportunities in many of the large urban areas and in the village marketplaces.

The Amazon River Basin in Brazil has such a variety of flora and fauna that is unique to the area that visitors could spend months exploring. Taking an eco-vacation into the rain forests of this vast country is a unique holiday. If you prefer more noise, crowds and excitement, visit Rio de Janeiro during Carnival. The party here goes on for days, with tourists and locals joining in the celebration of spring.

Ecuador is popular as a destination for a variety of holiday activities. The Galapagos Islands are the focus of attention since the visit of Darwin many years ago. The plants and animals are fascinating to view and to have an up-close experience. Other mainland activities in the country include hiking and backpacking through Andes elevations or surfing in the waters off the unspoiled beaches.

The sheer size of Argentina offers many opportunities for a vacation. If you want scenic beauty, pay a visit to Iguazu Falls. This immense water formation is virtually unknown in North America, but is well worth the trip. Buenos Aires has been likened to Paris in atmosphere, architecture and opportunities to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee in one of the outdoor sidewalk cafes.

Since Chile has more than three thousand miles of coastline, you can expect many vacation opportunities related to water activities. There are miles of surf, sun and sand where travelers can play in the surf, snorkel, scuba dive and swim as much as you like. In Santiago, the Mediterranean climate means that visitors can enjoy fine wines, delicious cuisines and a selection of handicrafts. The colonial architecture style is fascinating to many travelers.

Uruguay is considered to be one of the most stable countries on the continent. It offers a number of architectural marvels such as the Plaza de Torres in Colonia del Sacramento. The city of Montevideo is a great location for shopping or for viewing the Spanish and Italian influences in the buildings.

Choose from several of these South America vacation destinations to enjoy a variety of activities. Alternatively, you may want to focus on a single location and learn it more completely. If you have a lengthy time to vacation, pick a language school location and learn while you visit the area.
