St. George Island - Your Perfect Island Getaway

By Judy Ray

St. George Island is a 22-mile barrier island on Florida's Gulf Coast that boasts of unspoiled beaches and houses St. George Island State Park as well on its eastern end. The state park consists of salt marshes and nine miles of shoreline and forest serving as sanctuary of birds and a host of marine life. This is also the spot where the 79-foot St. George Island Lighthouse can be found. Standing in the center, it is the tallest structure in the island. Visitors and their pets are welcome in the island.

Outdoor activities on St. George Island consist of fishing, shell searching, walking, cycling and swimming together with breathtaking dolphins. Visitors may want to have sport down the shore or check out the distant coves and inlets within the island. Harbor and sporting goods merchants supply fishing boat, mountain bike and gear rentals, or boat owners may bring their very own vessels and use island boat launches and docks. Species of fish on St. George Island consist of red fish, speckled trout, bluefish, striped bass, tarpon, mackerel and snapper as well as oysters and shellfish. This pet-friendly island allows dogs and cats on the beach front and outfitting shops supply amenities for canines going on boats. The beaches contain strategically installed bag dispensers for dogs.

Cultural activities abound in St. George Island. Two of the main attractions are the Sea Oats Art Gallery and St. George Lighthouse. Sea Oats Art Gallery presents art by hometown artists, displaying acrylic and watercolor paintings. The gallery offers art course for people who want to study oil, watercolor or other types of portraits. Interestingly, the St. George Lighthouse permits guests to examine its vicinity and move up its challenging 92 stairs. The lighthouse similarly holds exciting occasions such as paintings fairs, art promotions and street dancing.

You can treat the whole family with the finest seafood in town. The island features around 10 dining places, from reasonably priced chain restaurants to locally-owned bistros. Fishers may prepare their catches of that day or indulge in crisp fish, such as steamed shellfish, prepared at area restaurants. Family-friendly restaurants offer kid-friendly food items like hot dogs, cheese burgers and puddings. Go for restaurants that serve breakfast and/or lunch or offer late-night dinner and entertainment. Restaurants with open-air patios admit diners with dogs and cats; some even giving dogs their own menu.

At St. George Island you always have a home to stay. It offers a few small motels overlooking the beach as well as campsites at St. George Island State Park and more than 650 vacation homes and condos. The majority of these accommodations are pet-friendly as long as animals remain leashed or respond to voice commands.
