The Religious Side of San Jose

San Jose, CA was founded in November of 1777 as Pueblo de San Jose. The city was originally built as a farming community to support the Spanish army, but later became the state capital when California became a state in 1850. It is a town rich with history and some of the prettiest landmarks are those with a non secular nature. Most of the churches in the area have a rich history, but 1 or 2 date back to California's start. When visiting, one should attempt to visit the spiritual landmarks in San Jose. Here listed are just a few of San Jose religious landmarks.

Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph

Just outside of the South Market lays the St. Joseph Cathedral, which is amongst the religious sites in San Jose, CA. This church was initially constructed in 1803; however it's been reconstructed many times. The first adobe structure was damaged by tremors; the second was ruined by the 1868 Hayward earthquake. The third attempt was annihilated by a fire and the 4th was only a short lived building. Ultimately in 1884, the Cathedral was rebuilt and is still operational today. It is the oldest parish in San Jose. It is best famous for its amazing pieces of art.

San Jose Betsuin Buddhist Church

In the guts of San Jose, CA lays a beautiful Buddhist church. The San Jose Betsuin Buddhist Church is the Church of the Jodo Shinshu Nishi Hongwanji practice and was set up in 1902. They host traditional Japanese holidays and serve Japanese cuisine. It's a San Jose spiritual landmark because of their holidays and continuing services.

Mission San Jose

The Mission San Jose was set up in June of 1797 and fully revived in 1985, making it one of the very oldest religious landmarks in San Jose. It's the location of the first Caesarian section birth, C-Section, in Alta California. Although the church has been restored to be tremor stable, many say it is an precise duplicate of the original mission. The mission was set up by Pa Fermin Francisco de Lasuen as a technique to teach the natives Christianity and the Spanish life.

Statue of Jesus Christ

In front of Cathedral of Faith in San Jose, lying in a stunning bush is a statue of Jesus Christ with his hands outstretched. Under the statue is the quote "Come to me, all you who are tired and burdened, and I'll give you rest." The quote is from St Matthew 11:28 in the new testament of the Bible. This stunning statue is a great spiritual site in San Jose to go to visit because of the peace and serenity it brings.First Unitarian Church of San JoseWith just one hundred folk attending, Unitarian services began in San Jose in 1865. The 1st Unitarian Church of San Jose is an unprecedented building due to its help in the women's suffrage movement and helping victims of the Civil War. The church was actually built in 1892, over 25 years after services initially began.
