Hi-360 Hana Tours By Bus In Maui, Hawaii

By Rena Hudson

There's no dearth of spectacular beaches and waterfalls in Hawaii, but Hana tours offer an experience unlike anything else on the islands. Located in an isolated corner on the eastern tip of Maui, it is the last unspoiled tropical paradise in the Hawaiian Islands. Visitors will be immersed in lush greenery and natural beauty so often promised in the tourist brochures, but seldom seen in reality.

Most visitors will land at Kahului Airport on a regional flight. The tour begins right away with the journey from the airport to Hana on HI-360. This 52-mile section of the highway can only be described as an experience not to be missed.

For the driver, the next few hours will be a treacherous time that requires extreme skill and concentration to get past the 59 bridges and 620 curves. A lot of these hairpin curves and old bridges are made all that much harder and time-consuming because they can accommodate only one lane of vehicles. For the passengers, it is an immersion into a beautiful and untouched paradise.

The air-conditioned tour buses used on this route come with wide windows that allow passengers to soak in the view. The road goes by several points of interest along the way. The bus will stop many times and let people disembark to get an up-close look at the waterfalls, scenery and historic attractions.

One of these stops is at Puohokamoa Falls, tumbling down 130 feet and into the ocean below. The Ohe'o Gulch Pools (Seven Sacred Pools) are a great spot to lay back and take a swim. Black Sand Beach at Waianapanapa State Park is another popular stop on this route just before the bus reaches the town.

Yet another place for a relaxing break is the Tedeschi Winery. Passengers can get off the bus, explore the winery and get a taste of some of their wines. Keanae Peninsula is also a popular attraction, created by lava flowing out of the Haleakala Crater. The never-ending and momentous battle between the jagged lava stones and the ocean waves offers clear evidence that man has no control over the elements in this part of the world.

Apart from Hana Bay, the main point of interest visitors will see on this tour as they enter the Town of Hana is the historic Hasegawa General Store. Other popular attractions include the 13th century Pi'ilanihale Heiau (temple) and the Kahanu Garden Botanical Gardens. The top two beaches here are Hana Beach Park and Hamoa Beach.

Hana tours don't end in the town, because getting back to civilization requires another drive on Hi-360. Visitors on a tour bus will likely go back the same way they came, but some tours and people in their own vehicle may decide to continue past the town to the Palapala Ho'omau Church. It is famous and well worth a stop because it has Charles Lindbergh's grave. The road continues past the church and snakes ahead towards the opposite coast and then through the island's central part back to Kahului, making this tour a round trip of Maui.
